Amazon on Tuesday agreed to buy satellite company Globalstar, known for powering Apple's "Emergency SOS" feature, for $11.57 billion in cash.

Amazon said it would acquire Globalstar, giving its nascent satellite internet business a boost as it vies to compete with Elon Musk's SpaceX.

Amazon and Globalstar have announced a definitive merger agreement under which Amazon will acquire the satellite operator. The deal also finally puts to bed questions about the fate of Apple's exclusive satellite connectivity partner.
